ALL MY LASH SECRETS

all my secrets for longer lashes | vital blonde | by hunter wuensche

It seems I’m asked at least once a day, “are your lashes real?” Most of the time, my answer is yes. I don’t have lash extensions, but I do wear fake lashes on occasion (more on those in a bit). My natural lashes are quite long to begin with, but I’m a firm believer that with a little patience and a lot of mascara, anyone can get envy-worthy lashes. Wondering how to get the look of longer lashes? I’m dishing the secrets.

all my secrets for longer lashes | mascara | vital blonde | by hunter wuensche

AU NATURALE

Are you ready for the secret? It’s pretty simple, actually. Just use more than one mascara. Most mascaras are designed to give different results — some are great for adding volume, some are great for adding length, etc. I have tried many a mascara, both high-end and drugstore, and I have yet to find one magical mascara that does it all.

I typically use two different mascaras. The first one will separate the lashes and add length. The second one gives that “wow” volume. I also used to be an avid user of only high-end mascaras, but now I mostly use drugstore mascara.

WHY?

It’s the same thing. Truth be told, the actual formula of each mascara does not differ from tube to tube. The black stuff is basically the same ish. The difference is in the brush/applicator and in the stopper that controls how much product gets on the applicator. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather pay 1/3 of the price if I’m gonna get the same thing and splurge on other products.

SO WHAT DO I USE?

My go-to right now for the “base” or 1st layer mascara is Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious in “blackest black.” This mascara is AMAZING. It even adds a teeny bit of volume, so if I have a fresh tube of this stuff I can almost get away with just using one mascara for the look I like.

Another great base is the L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara. Y’all, this mascara has a cult following FOR A REASON. It’s amazing for separating and and lengthening lashes. If I’m using this one, I use it first and then follow with the Maybelline I previously mentioned.

My second layer mascara is L’Oreal Lash Paradise, also in “blackest black.” This one gives allllll the volume. Gimme gimme. Another reason I don’t like to shell out all the $$ for high-end mascara? This one is a dupe for Too Faced Better Than Sex. It’s the same thing — just a fraction of the price.

For something more high-end, I decided to try the NARS Climax mascara recently, and I actually like it a lot. I’m a sucker for packaging, so that’s what really drew me in for this one. I don’t like using this one on it’s own, but it’s really great when paired with the Maybelline mascara I mentioned previously for an “everyday” look. This mascara is also a good “base” mascara, and it’s particularly great at separating your lashes and giving definition to them so they don’t look clumpy.

Those three are just the ones in my current lash rotation, but there are others I also like. I pretty much always stick to Maybelline and L’Oreal mascaras as far as brands go. I’ll link a few others I’ve tried and liked at the end of the post! If you MUST go high-end for mascara, opt for Lancome Hypnose Drama or Benefit Roller Lash or They’re Real, or the NARS Climax I’ve been using. Other honorable mentions are Milk Makeup Kush Mascara and Lancome Monsieur Big.

all my secrets for longer lashes | fake lashes | vital blonde | by hunter wuensche

FAKIN’ IT

I have yet to hop on the bandwagon of lash extensions. I’m terrified of destroying my lashes as they are now since they’re already quite long and always have been. However, I do wear fake lashes from time to time since they don’t damage your lashes as long as they’re applied correctly. I also love the feeling of a totally clean face — if I’m taking my makeup off I want it ALL off.

I tend to go through periods of time where I’ll wear falsies literally every day, and then not wear them at all for weeks. I can typically get roughly five or so wears out of each pair, considering that Stevie doesn’t find them and eat them first. We’ve had a few incidents of that.

I also don’t like to buy high-end lashes. I’ve tried Huda Beauty lashes and while they look gorgeous, the band is quite thick and heavy and just makes me want to rip my eyelids off. I am a Taurus through and through and while I love high-end, I can’t justify spending $20+ on lashes that end up making me a crazy person by the end of the day. However, I do like these and these for particularly fancy occasions.

I LOVE Ardell lashes. They’re cheap, there’s tons of styles, and you can buy them in multi-packs most of the time. My favorites are the Wispies and Double Wispies for a more dramatic look. Because you know, I love a dramatic lash look. I typically buy Wispies in a four pack and it will last me a month or two before I need more.

One thing about fake lashes if you’ve never used them: you have to have glue to apply them. Most lash glue typically contains latex. I’m allergic to latex, so I opt for the Duo non-latex glue which works like a charm. The original glue works great as well, but it makes me want to scratch my eyes off.

all my secrets for longer lashes | lash serum lash boost | vital blonde | by hunter wuensche

GROW ‘EM OUT

YES, you can grow your real lashes! My absolute FAVORITE lash serum that I will now never go without is Rodan + Fields Lash Boost. I have a few friends who sell R+F, and I heard great things about the product, so I decided to give it a try to support them as well.

Oh. My. Word. I didn’t think my natural lashes could get better. They were already long, and I TRUTHFULLY didn’t think any serum could make a big difference, but it did. My lashes are fuller and a bit longer. They seriously look as good as my falsies with just a few swipes of mascara! I don’t have a link for you to this product, but I would reach out to someone you know who sells R+F and tell them you want some lash boost! If you don’t know anyone who sells it, send me an Instagram DM and I’ll connect you with someone!

Another lash serum that I’ve tried is Latisse. Latisse is made by Allergan, which is the pharma company I used to work for, and it requires a prescription in a few states including Texas and New York.

I know a few people who have seen great results from using this, but I’ve never really used it consistently enough to see results. It also has some possible side effects (like turning your eye color more brown) that I’m not fond of. This did not happen to me, but I’m paranoid of it happening which has kept me from using it consistently.

If you’re interested in Latisse, you can get a prescription for it from your doctor to fill at the pharmacy or you can get it through the website SkinSolutions. To my knowledge, this is the only approved online vendor by Allergan to purchase Latisse, so I wouldn’t buy it from anywhere else online to be safe. It still technically requires a prescription, so you’ll have to fill out some medical info as well!

And that basically sums it up! Do you have any lash secrets to share? Head over to my latest Instagram and leave a comment telling me your secrets!

SEPHORA SPRING SALE

SEPHORA SPRING SALE 2018 | VITAL BLONDE

If you know me at all, you know I can’t resist walking into Sephora as soon as I see it. (Okay honestly I pretty much run as soon as I see it.) Lucky for all of us, Sephora’s Spring Sale is back, BUT it ends today. I decided to round up some of my favorite or “must-have” products for you to snag before the sale ends tonight. Today is my 23rd birthday, so I had no shame clicking “add to cart” on a few items as a little birthday present to myself.

SOOO… HOW DOES IT WORK?

First off, you need to be a Beauty Insider to participate in the sale. You can sign up here. Once you sign up and have your items all in your cart, you’ll want to enter the code for which level Beauty Insider you are.

Beauty Insiders: 10% off everything with code YAYINSIDER

VIB: 15% off everything with code YAYVIB

Rouge: 15% off everything with code YAYROUGE

MY FAVORITES:

INVISIBOBBLE // These are my favorite hair ties! They look way cute in your hair and don’t leave a crimp.

KOPARI COCONUT BODY GLOW // I want anything and everything that will make me glow AND smell like a tropical paradise.

LAURA MERCIER TRANSLUCENT POWDER // I always need more powder. Always. #OilySkinProbs

NARS POWERMATTE LIP PIGMENT // This liquid lipstick does. not. budge. I have the shade “Get It On” because I’m incapable of resisting a cheeky color name.

ANASTASIA DIPBROW POMADE // This is the secret to amazing brows.

T3 HAIR DRYER // I have an older model of this hair dryer, but it’s made a HUGE difference in my hair. (aka I dislike washing my hair a little bit less now)

ANASTASIA GLOW KIT // Does anyone else want to bathe in highlight? Just me? Ok.

DR. DENNIS GROSS ALPHA BETA PEEL PADS // Every time I use these my skin feels BOMB. Read more about why you should get these here.

KATE SOMERVILLE EXFOLIKATE // I use this in the shower, turn the water heat all the way up (I enjoy burning my skin off it’s fine), and then enjoy the steam for a couple minutes before washing it off.

WHAT I BOUGHT:

SOL DE JANEIRO BRAZILIAN CRUSH FRAGRANCE MIST // I just wanna smell like summer all the time.

DR. JART ALL THAT CONTOURS SHEET MASK // I’ve heard this sheet mask is similar to getting Botox, so I will report back with results. Sidebar — I got Botox almost 2 months ago and I’m working on a post about that experience!

NARS CREAMY CONCEALER // This concealer has a cult following, and since I’m almost out of my beloved Tarte Shape Tape I decided I would give this a try.

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR FOUNDATION // This is a repurchase for me! I love this foundation because it has great coverage but also feels super light.

If I had it my way, I would probably purchase just about everything during this sale. BUT I’ve done a little too much #treatyoself this month (birthday month so it’s justified?) so I had to limit myself a bit. Let me know what you’re picking up for yourself from the sale — be sure to hurry, it ends tonight!

2016 FAVORITES

2016 Favorites | The Lipstick Tales

2016 Favorites Close Up | The Lipstick Tales

Now that 2016 has come to a close, (thankfully!) I wanted to share my favorite products from the year! I tried to pick products that I wore on any “average day” and include as many makeup categories as I could. Some of these are different from my current favorites since I purchased some new products, but I wanted to keep this post true to what I wore most throughout the year.

On to my 2016 favorites!

Face

NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint – This is my favorite foundation for warm, humid months (aka the whole year in Texas!) My skin is oily so I always reach for a matte finish! However, in the past week this CC cream has become my new favorite since it is more moisturizing.

Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer – I love this concealer for covering undereye circles. I’m convinced I’m actually nocturnal, so I frequently need a heavy duty concealer to cover up those dreaded circles.

Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Palette – If you’re looking for a good contour palette, hands down get this one. I used the Anastasia Contour Palette previously, and the Kat Von D has better color payoff and looks less powdery and chalky. She recently released a refillable palette which I’ll be purchasing when I use this one all up!

NARS Dual-Intensity Blush in ‘Fervor’ – This blush duo has been my go-to the whole year, and I love that you can get 3 different colors out of it by using either color or mixing the two. The colors are really intense and incredibly flattering.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in ‘Soft and Gentle’ – I’ve had this bad boy for 5 years now, and I’m just now getting to where I’ll need to repurchase it soon! It’s a bit pricey, but worth the money. I always get compliments on my highlight when I’m wearing this, it’s an all-time favorite.

Eyes

NARS Duo Eyeshadow in ‘Kalahari’ – If you look closely, you can tell I put a pretty massive dent in the lighter (left side) of the two colors. It’s pretty safe to say that I wore this eyeshadow most days of the year! I frequently paired it with NARS ‘Coconut Grove’ in the crease and MAC ‘Nylon’ as a highlight.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner – This liner has been my favorite for YEARS. It has a cult following for a reason! Its the only liquid liner that I’ve found that doesn’t dry out on the tip, which is important for getting a sharp wing.

Benefit Roller Lash Mascara – Another longtime favorite of mine! I love this mascara for lengthening, separating and lifting lashes.

Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara – This is a mascara I discovered this year. The price tag is pretty high, but I’m obsessed with the dramatic look it gives to your lashes! It quickly overtook Roller Lash as my top favorite mascara.

MAC Veluxe Brow Liner Pencil in ‘Fling’ – For majority of the year this is what I used to fill in my brows, but I have recently switched over to the Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade in ‘Ash Brown.’ I love that this pencil has a spoolie on the other end which is super helpful when doing your brows.

Lips

Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick in ‘Bitch Perfect’ – I think it’s safe to say this is my favorite lipstick ever. I’m getting pretty close to using the entire thing up, which I’ve never done to a lipstick before! I pretty much carry this lipstick with me at all times, I love it that much. All of Charlotte Tilbury’s lipsticks have a gorgeous finish, so try one if you haven’t!

Colourpop Liquid Lipsticks in ‘Frick N’ Frack’ and ‘Times Square’ – Liquid Lipsticks blew up this past year, and I am close to trying all of the popular brands. In my opinion, the Kylie liquid lipsticks are overrated and overpriced. I love the Colourpop liquid lipsticks in both the matte and satin finish, and they are SO much cheaper than most other liquid lipsticks and have a huge range of colors. I wore these two most over the past year.

Perfume

Gucci Guilty – I have several different perfumes and I love switching up my scent depending on my mood. I go for warmer scents that are more “nighttime” than “daytime,” and this one was my favorite for the year. I actually have the Gucci Guilty Intense version, which is “more provocative and sensual” according to Sephora. Essentially it’s just a more intense version of the original!

What were your favorites throughout the year? Let me know in the comments, I love hearing everyone’s favorite products! I’m also going to be doing a full-face makeup video VERY soon to show exactly how I do my makeup everyday, so let me know what kind of look you’d like to see as well!

P.S. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram! I’ve consolidated my accounts and will only be posting from @hunterwuensche from now on!

HOW TO FAKE A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

How to Fake Good Night's Sleep | The Lipstick Tales How to Fake Good Night's Sleep | The Lipstick Tales

Being a college student isn’t very nice for your sleep schedule. Being a college student who is prone to terrible stress dreams and nightmares is even worse. (I literally wake up shaking and crying in the middle of the night, it’s a great time!) So needless to say, I’ve gotten pretty good at faking a well-rested look, or at least I’d like to think so. Here are a few of my little tips to make it look like that 4 hours of sleep was actually 8 hours.

White Eyeliner

I fee like this one is no secret anymore, but I’m telling you IT WORKS. I use this Chella highlighter pencil, and it’s perfect because it’s not too stark white but also isn’t too flesh toned. I swear this makes the biggest difference, if you haven’t tried it you have to!

Concealer

Not just any concealer, but a really good full coverage one. Something has to hide those dark circles! I wear shade 7, and this tube lasts so long. I apply it in a triangle shape under my eyes to make sure the whole area is brightened up. I also really want to try this YSL apricot color correcting concealer to help cancel out dark circles.

Mascara

A major trick to appearing well-rested is having that wide-eyed look, and full lashes is one of the easiest ways to achieve that. I have naturally long lashes that have curl to them already, (sorry I got the good genes, little sis!) I’ve mentioned before how one of my biggest makeup tricks is to use more than one mascara, and I’m sticking by that! Benefit Roller Lash, Maybelline Lash Sensational and L’Oreal Miss Manga Rock are the three in my rotation currently.

Highlight

Lack of sleep can leave your skin looking rather dull. Giving your skin a good glow will fool just about anyone into thinking you got a full night of sleep! MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle is my holy grail highlighter, it gives the perfect natural-looking highlight. Pair it with a good blush (this one is my favorite!) and kiss dull, tired skin goodbye.

Do you have any tricks to faking the well-rested look?

Kylie Cosmetics Metal Mattes | The Lipstick Tales

Kylie Cosmetics Metal Mattes | The Lipstick Tales

Kylie Cosmetics Metal Mattes | The Lipstick Tales

I tried really hard not to get sucked into the hype, y’all. I tried. My first Kylie Cosmetics purchase was the Kourt K lip kit, which I ended up loving. Once I saw these metals,  I knew I had to get my hands on them. So many people have asked me what I think of them, so I thought I would do a little review for you!

All three shades are very pigmented, and just one coat of product gives amazing color payoff. I’m completely obsessed with the metallic shine they all have, it’s gorgeous.

Heir is the lightest of the three, and has a sort of nude peach tone to the color. I really like wearing this one with Charlotte Tilbury Bitch Perfect lipstick underneath, because I’ve found it makes the color suit my skin tone better.

King K is a golden bronze color, and is probably my favorite of the three even though it’s a close call! I wear this one with Charlotte Tilbury Iconic Nude lip liner underneath.

Reign is the darkest, and is a bronze red color. The website describes it as copper, which it has some hints of, but I feel the undertone is far more red than anything. It also is much darker in person than it appears on the website, but a beautiful color nonetheless.

They’re also fairly long-lasting, although Heir didn’t seem to wear quite as long as the other two from what I found.

One of my favorite things about matte lipsticks is that they are usually fairly smudge proof and don’t transfer easily, but that is not the case with these. This is my main problem with this product. I don’t believe that they are a true matte lipstick, they definitely have more of a satin texture. They can be quite a bit sticky depending on how much product you use. I also wouldn’t say they are drying at all like some matte lipsticks can be, which is good.

If you don’t like scented makeup, you’ll probably have a problem with these. They have a decently strong, sweet smell. I wouldn’t say it smells bad, but I’m also not particularly fond of the smell either. I’m sure it’s used to cover up the sort of “chemical” smell that unscented liquid lipsticks sometimes have, I just find the scent to be too strong.

Overall, they’re not a perfect product, but I wasn’t necessarily expecting a perfect product either. I think the color and pigmentation of these lipsticks alone makes it worth it. I’ve found myself reaching for these three more than any other lip products since I’ve had them. They’re also amazing for layering with other lip products to create new and unique colors.

Bottom line: you need these in your makeup bag. Trust me.

Shop My Look:

Top: Banana Republic | Jeans: Topshop | Jacket: Banana Republic | Necklace: Beaded by W

For my spring break this year I took a trip with my Meme to New York for Fashion PR Confidential. We scheduled in a couple extra days for the trip so we could shop and enjoy the city before my workshop, and being the lipstick lover that I am, I just HAD to make a stop at the Bite Lip Lab.

Bite Beauty is a cosmetics line sold at Sephora. They specialize in lip products and use ingredients that are food grade quality. Their Lip Lab, located in SoHo, is a place where you can make your own custom lipstick color, and they’ll even keep your formula on file for you so you can reorder it easily.

The first part of the process is making your color, and was my favorite part. I had been searching for the perfect magenta pink that was just the right amount of purple but was also wearable. I’d been mixing MAC Up the Amp and Lovelorn trying to perfect the color, so I knew that this was the sort of custom color I wanted to create. You can also choose the finish of your lipstick, and I chose “cuvee” which is a sort of satin finish.

My first color mixed was too pink, the next was too violet, and the last one ended up being my perfect color. My Meme started out creating a very wearable color, but eventually decided she wanted a really good blue toned red. You can see those gorgeous blue undertones in the last swatch on her swatch card- I’ve never seen such a beautiful red!

The next step is to select the scent/flavor of your lipstick, which is created with essential oils. I chose to mix cherry and vanilla for my lipstick, considering my Sonic order is always cherry vanilla diet coke! 😉

After all of that is decided, they mix up your color and pour it into the mold. It’s set on a freezer, which chills it down and solidifies it into it’s lipstick form so it can be placed in the bullet. Once that’s done, you have your own custom lipstick! They give you a card with the recipe for your color, and also keep it on file so you can reorder it if you run out.

The whole experience was really fun! I definitely recommend making an appointment (which is needed) if you’re in NYC. Grab lunch at Joe’s Pizza (my favorite) after to make a day out of it! If you’re looking for a color similar to the one I made, this one is almost identical.

Have you ever been to the Bite Lip Lab or anything like it? Let me know 🙂

Top High End Foundations

Top High End Foundations | The Lipstick Tales

I get a LOT of questions on what face makeup I use, and a lot of times it varies by the day! I’m a huge advocate of using high-end makeup on your face, because I always want the very best on my skin. Here are my top 3 foundations that I wear on rotation.

Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet

I absolutely love this foundation, and I wear shade B40. It makes my skin look completely flawless, and feels like there’s nothing on my skin. It can be hard to find a foundation that sits just right on oily skin, considering most just kind of slip off. This foundation has such a strange consistency (it seems SO runny!) but works perfectly on normal to oily skin. I definitely would not recommend this one to anyone with remotely dry skin, and if that’s you, try this one instead! But for most days, this is my go-to! Keep in mind too, a little bit goes a long way with this product.

Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue

If you don’t like a heavy foundation, this is the one for you. It’s pretty similar to a tinted moisturizer, but the consistency is almost a bit more like a gel. I typically prefer a little bit more coverage out of a foundation than this gives, but it’s also buildable, so you can get more coverage out of it if you want to. I didn’t think that I was going to like this foundation at all because it’s marketed more to dry skin types, but I’ve found it really works well for all skin! Sometimes oily/combo skin overproduces oil because of a lack of moisture, and this product really ensures your skin gets the moisture it needs. Another great thing about this product is that the color range is very forgiving and relatively easy to find the right match. I have both buttercream and ginger, and I’ve found that both shades can be blended to match my skin well.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD

This is the newest foundation that I’ve tried. I heard so many good things about it that I thought I’d give it a try, and I wound up loving it! The shade range has a TON of colors, so no one should have a problem finding the right match. I wear shade 123/Y365. HD foundations were developed to make your skin look amazing on camera, and I can promise you that it does just that! I’ve been wearing this pretty much everyday, and my only complaint is that it doesn’t seem to wear as well as the day goes on. (If your skin isn’t as oily as mine you might not have this problem though!) Definitely be sure to moisturize well and prime before using this foundation. I’ve found it does look best in the first few hours of wear, so that’s just something to keep in mind.

Have you tried any of these foundations? Let me know which are your favorites in the comments!

Summer Lips

Summer Lips | The Lipstick Tales

Happy July, friends! I can’t believe that June is already over, where does the time go? Today I’m sharing the 2nd part of my summer series, my favorite summer lip products. Although I have a tendency to wear the same colors throughout the year, there are some that definitely fit better in the summer. I picked my top five, and lately I’ve been wearing these on rotation!

Summer Lips - MAC Please Me | The Lipstick Tales

MAC “Please Me”

This lipstick is my perfect everyday pink. It’s bright, but not too bright. This color goes with everything, which is what makes it perfect throw on for lazy summer days. It has a matte finish, so I always wear a gloss on top. I’m always wary of matte finishes in the summer because they can feel dry, but with a gloss this one has the perfect texture.

Summer Lips - NARS Heat Wave | The Lipstick Tales

NARS “Heat Wave”

This is the perfect summer red. It’s warm toned, which gives it that vibrant almost-coral look. Surprisingly enough, this one is also a matte finish, but I have less of a problem with it being drying than the MAC mattes. The color is outstanding though, and looks perfect with a tan!

Summer Lips- Charlotte Tilbury Nude Kate | The Lipstick Tales

Charlotte Tilbury “Nude Kate”

I’ve said this before, but I had never really tried a true nude lipstick before this one. I love that the color doesn’t wash you out, who wants that for summer?! The color is inspired by Kate Moss, as the name suggests, and I always think she has the perfect look for summer!

Summer Lips - NARS Sixties Fan | The Lipstick Tales

NARS “Sixties Fan”

In the bottle, this color looks scary dark. However, when it’s applied it is actually extremely wearable. It’s a sort of pomegranate color that warms up your skin and is super easy to throw on with any outfit. My roommate is always stealing this one from me (looking at you, Rachel!) but I can’t blame her, the color is amazing!

Summer Lips - MAC Razzledazzler | The Lipstick Tales

MAC “Razzledazzler”

This color has probably been my most worn lately. It’s a light orange, which is a pretty scary color for most people who aren’t used to orange lipsticks. Something about the color just screams summer to me, probably because it reminds me of a dreamsicle! I wear Laura Mercier “Nectar” Lip Glacé over this one for a glossy finish, which is my favorite in the summer.

Thanks so much for reading! What are your favorite summer lip products?
